We are in Ice Cream Heaven

Following the 4th of July dusting off of the ice cream maker with the vanilla caramel pecan ice cream recipe courtesy of a Diva Marketing post we have been including our ice cream maker in our daily routine. Today’s email brought another heavenly picture and two divinely inspired ice cream recipes from 101 Cookbooks. One is titled Batch Family Mountain Cherry Coconut Ice Cream and the other is simply called Cherry Ice Cream. We will be trying one tomorrow night.

101 Cookbooks is the source of our new all time favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, posted in April….this recipe surpassed even our former all time favorite chocolate child cookie recipes from December 2003 and December 2004. Now, I know the exact definition of the perfect chocolate chip cookie varies greatly among aficionados…but for us, the measure is degree of chewiness and the April version is it.

Yes, searching for the perfect chocolate chip cookie is a winter pastime and searching for the perfect ice cream concoction is our summer pastime….and just like my Silver Palate cookbooks were for many years the source that never let me down, 101 Cookbooks has become that place in recent times so I have high hopes for the cherry ice cream, although I have not yet decided which recipe to try. The definition for our perfect ice cream concoction is different than our definition for chocolate chip cookies….it is most everything we try that starts with Vanillia Ice Cream and moves on from there.

Kickball Lives!

An article in today’s WSJ on kickball caught my nostalgic Boomer’s eye… I started thinking about that red ball, recess, and grade school. Red_kickball_1

I would never have imagined back then (way, way back then) that there would be such a thing as WAKA, the World Adult Kickball Association. Kickball, it seems is quite popular  among "recent college graduates" who according to the WSJ "appreciate its combination of minimal physical exertion, ample game-time socializing and postgame drinking." Sounds like the perfect sport for the recently publicly labeled entitlement generation.

No less an authority than Dr. Mel Levine has proclaimed an epidemic of twentysomethings "who had too much success early in life
and who’ve become accustomed to instant gratification…many of the individuals we see are heavily
committed to something we call ‘fun.’" Must have been all those blue first place ribbons for "participation" that they have….now they are all expecting to graduate from college, put in a hard morning as CEO of General Motors, and play competitive kickball until Happy Hour.

The entitled have responded at Corante by blaming their elders…. for misinforming them. Is not-it one word or two?

A Confession

I previously wrote a post that was critical of Axe deodorant’s shamelessly sexist advertising targeted at adolescent boys and noted that I had purchased some of their deodorant for my own son without realizing HOW low they were going. Well, a friend sent me an email today with an article   from the Washington Post, "Aimed at Guys, Axe Really Smells–Like Money". I had to email back a confession…I bought more AXE.

The first mistake was no doubt being at the store with my son to begin with…I know better, but we were on a different mission where his presence was necessary. As we walked towards the desired aisle, an AXE body wash end-aisle display came into his field of vision. "I will take more showers," he coaxed. I demanded a definition of "more" since his summer definition of "shower" was "swimming pool".

What’s a mother to do? I caved. I sold out in the name of cleanliness, but a sell-out nonetheless.

If You Need Another Reason To Love Blogs

Well, I was all ready planning on homemade ice cream to complete our 4Th of July dinner but was still trying to decide on a flavor.  The ice cream maker belongs to my son and for several weeks we have been talking about getting it out and cranking it up…..since he has been preoccupied with his snow cone maker lately, it has really been me talking about it and him shaking his head in disinterested agreement versus the constant reminders to get on it Mom signaling real interest. However, we have adult guests coming over for dinner and I’m thinkin’ ice cream….the kids can try the new root beer flavor snow cone syrup

So…as I perused my Blogline feeds I noticed that Diva Marketing had a post entitled Ice Cream which was raving about a certain ice cream recipe that was available at the Amateur Gourmet. The picture of the concoction was enough to convince me of what we would be having post fireworks tonight.

So, Happy 4Th….I am off to the store (for the 92ND time today). This recipe has our name all over it! Thanks Diva and Amateur Gourmet!

July 4, 1776 Ransom Note?

July 1, 2005 · Filed Under Blogging, Bloggers, Current Affairs, Just interesting · Comment

As some of prepare to light up our grills and the night sky to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776  and others turn to a discussion of the Declaration of Independence as a  ransom notes perhaps it is noteworthy to mention that the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 and signed as a draft only by congressional secretary Charles Thomson and John Hancock….it was not finally signed by all delegates until August 2, 1776.

The Therapist quotes NBC’s Brian Willliam’s blog take on how the activities of our founding fathers could be compared to the 1979 kidnapping of American diplomats. Williams then goes on to say that the analogy fits "Except that Jefferson didn’t kidnap
innocent people and blindfold them to embarrass Jimmy Carter. But he did
manage to write that big old ransom note with twenty-seven draconian
demands.
So let’s just say my analogy is schematically correct."

Michelle Malkin writes under the heading, Brian Williams Said What? of Brian William’s latest history lesson and mentions his receipt of the Buffoon of the Week award from AnkelBitingPundits…I would have to concur. Yes, the American Revolution was a revolution against the existing government but the Declaration, on whatever date it was signed does not qualify as a ransom note or in any other way compare to the 1979 kidnapping.
