Panera Bread To The Rescue…again

July 21, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

Once again there is a power outage here in St. Louis and once again Panera Bread is the refuge….the coffee is hot and the WiFi is free. The storm that lasted about 10 minutes on Wednesday night left many without power and now we wait. Panera, we are grateful!

More About Blogging

July 21, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

The Pew Internet & American Life Project released a report on blogging this week that highlighted the personal aspects of blogging. The report notes that there are 12 million Americans that write blogs (8% ofテつ Internet users) and 57 million blog readers (39% of the online population). Various aspects of the study have been written about on blogs and in the mainstream media. The Washington Postテつ notedテつ that bloggers are "under 30 and Social." Others, such as Benneton Talk noted that although bloggers in the Pew study did not blog for money, there are bloggers that are paid.

テつ Neville Hobson wondered if anyone had similar information about the British and found that the Guardian did: 11% of British Internet users have a blog, or 7 milion bloggers out of the 27 million Internet users. The full Pew report is available at the Pew site. The British blogger information comes from a report commissioned by MSN Spaces and discussed further in the Daily Mail.

The issue of blogger compensation was most recently brought to the forefront by Jason Calacanis’ offer to pay $1000 per month to those posting without compensation to Digg, Reddit, Flickr and other similar sites. Nicolas Carr has a great post on this topic which concludes that there has not been a market value set for social media within existing price system the but that this is now starting to emerge as evidenced by Calacanis’s offer. Techcrunch saw it another way and believes that to pay the small number of Digg users who create the majority of the content without pay would dilute the Digg concept.

The overall message is pretty clear: Blogs and social media is influencing all aspects of our lives whether we want it to or not. Check these guides to the various blogospheres:

Post Production Product Placement: Digital Brand Integration

July 19, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

Marathon Ventures has turned the concept of digitally inserting images into video into a business model to tap into the $3.5 BILLION dollar product placement market. Their process called Digital Brand Integration "enables the virtual placement of brand images into existing television, movies, and other video-based entertainment content" according to Media Post. Marathon has filed for a patent for their system of post-production product placements in video programming according to the NewYork Times.

The technology allows advertisers to place products in scenes of TV shows after they have been produced and as noted by MediaPost allows for new ad inventory without the need for creating new ads. So far, Kraft, Chevy Impala, StarKist Tuna and Keebler have signed up.

PQ Media reports that of the $3.5 billion spent on product placement, $1.8 billion was spent on TV, and the remainder on "other media." PQ Media reports that reality television is driving the product placement market. American Idol, according to Nielson Monitor-Plus was the number 1 place for product placement with 3,052 occurrences as reported by MediaWeek; this was 3 times the number of product placements of the No. 2 program, The Biggest Loser.

Coca Cola was the biggest spender with 2510 product placements on American Idol. That’s a lot of cups of Coke.

One of the addtional benefits of the technology is the ability to use one brand for current programming and another brand for syndication or video release. Additionally, it allows for immediate changes in sponsorships, Coke one week, Pepsi the next. A product recall, scandal or crisis could be dealt with, without pulling an entire show. Or, a controversial show and an advertiser can have their product removed from the virtual shelf.

John Edward and Rocketboom Go Mo’Social

July 18, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

Marshall Kirkpatrick at TechCrunch announced this morning that Senator John Edwards and Rocketboomテつ are using the newly launched Move Digital pay as you go digital distribution service. The service according to Marshall is a easy to use way to turn media into torrents and mobile streams. Marshall has a great explanation of the technology and Mobile Crunch explains the mobile tool. My interest is purely social….and mostly about social media in the upcoming elections.

Interest in Rocketboom?テつ Well, Steve Rubel is calling the departure of Amanda Congdon the "Boom Heard Round Hollywood" based upon the idea that online talent, writers, podcasters, video bloggers will be "plucked from their internet perches" to become stars of stage and screen..if the can "transcend the online world." Alan Jenkins completely disagrees and thinks Steve should be hired by Variety and that Rocketboom is boring. I think Steve’s comments are interesting in light of the implication that those in social media are a kind of farm team for traditional media. That is probably another blog post. Rocketbooms using Move Digital is ‘mo interesting.

John Edwards using Move Digital is even more interesting. Marshall said he talked to Michael Silberman at EchoDitto about the use of MoveDigital by Edwards to distribute content because of Silberman’s involvement with the Dean camapaign. The use of blogs by the Dean campaign was an introduction to blogging for many Americans and is a reference point for blog adoption.テつ Marshall wrote, "He believes that using Bittorent is a very logical way to achieve the goal of using grass roots online volunteers to distribute information. Thatテ「竄ャ邃「s largely the point of online volunteering."

John Edwards is definitely mo’social and clearly the most social media involved of any of the political candidates that I have observed.

Edwards campaign blog announced today that there is a John Edwards Yahoo group in all 50 states.

Wal-Mart and JC Penny: Desparately Seeking Social Networking Without Actually Having One

July 17, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

AdAge announced today that Wal-Mart has launched their answer to MySpace, the Hub. The target is teens, who they call Hubsters. The Hubsters can put up a page, pictures, video and music and win "fab" prizes. Now how fab is that?

テつ Sound similar so far? Here’s the catch according to AdAge…Wal-Mart screens all the content, informs parents when kids join and members cannot email each other. If they do, maybe their punishment is shopping at Wal-Mart. The home page has video of some actors playing the parts of real teenagers. As AdAge said, "Seriously" {?} As the four teenagers at my house tonight said, "Are you kidding?" (OK, full disclosure: two of them are mine and only one said anything, the others just laughed.)

テつ JC Penny borrows a few ideas from MySpace also.テつ Penney’s new advertising campaign, "You’ve Got It Inside" sends kids to their microsite, テつ They have profiles, but of the actors who are hawking clothes from their "closets." Penney’s has partners for this, which includes MTV so if the kids want to put up their profile, listen to music, or otherwise interact, they can do it on MTV.

I am not sure what research Wal-Mart, Penneys, or their agencies have been reading about teenagers BUT they might just want to check YPulse , Pew Internet, or the seven ways to make an impact with teens from the Y&R Brand Asset Valuator;or do a little research on your own by visiting MySpace or finding a teenager and talking to them face-to-face.
